Varsity Liquors is celebrating Halloween in October with an array of seasonal wine and spirits!  We look forward to introducing you to our store and some very spooky favorites.

Witches Brew by Leelanau Cellars is a spiced red wine that simmers with the allure of an Autumn’s eve. The special recipe, when served warm, fills the night air with the spirits of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg, dispelling the chill of the season. Fire up your cauldron and heat this brew to the temperature of a witch’s tongue, but do not boil, lest the enchantment be undone. Bewitched!

Blood Orange Mimosa is born! This is a wine cocktail made from grape wine and the juice and pulp of the celebrated, crimson-fleshed Sicilian blood oranges. The finest cultivars are orchestrated to achieve the best combination of flavors, fragrance and color: the darkest-hued, Moro: Tarocco, the tastiest and sweetest; and the tender Sanguinello.  Light, fruity, refreshing and flavorsome.

The Black Vodka by Blavod is the only premium black vodka on the market today. It is not surprising that with all of the designer vodkas on the market that someone would devise a way to add color to the famously clear liquor without drastically disturbing ay of the flavor characteristics of a true vodka.

Crystal Head Vodka is the “Pure Spirit” vodka that is triple filtered through polished crystals known as Herkimer diamonds. This vodka is free of additives and is exquisite any time of the year but perhaps ideal for October. Brought to us by Dan Aykroyd, Crystal Head Vodka ties in with the story of the 13 Crystal Heads that have been unearthed at various times on our planet from the Yucatan to Tibet. The Heads are believed to emit positive energy, good will and prosperity. Crystal Head Vodka is perfect as a lone shot, chilled or served in signature cocktails.

Sixth Sense Syrah a wine that emits striking aromas of ripe dark fruits that radiate from the glass in an earthy, smoky tobacco context.  Full, rich fruit flavors of dark berries, whole plum, and black currant fill the palate and hold their flavors through a long and smooth moderately peppery finish.

The Old Ghost Old Vine Zinfandel definitely has a mind of its own and the 2006 vintage was no exception. Harvested during the latter part of October, the 96-year-old vineyard chosen for the “Old Ghost” produced very tiny yields, less than one ton per acre. This is a big wine with plenty of “stuffing” and structure. With gobs of intense berry flavors, botanicals and spice, the wine has brawn coupled with elegance. Not for the faint-hearted!
