Stoney’s – Not all about country
The questions have poured in
since it was first announced: “When is that new place going to open up where
Jillian’s used to be?” The answer is mid-January, and the other question: “Will
they have both kinds, country and
western?” is the wrong question to ask. Stoney’s will have country music, but
any connections people are making to Urban
Cowboy are a little off the mark.
Casino Aztar’s Entertainment District newest resident
will offer a little bit of everything for everyone. Country, rock music, Top
40, even comedy – all is in the works for entertainment at the venue conceived
by Las Vegas-based owner Stoney Gray. Expect to see a mix of people who don’t
fit the mold of a country music-themed nightclub. Suits and ties, casual wear
and yes, boots and buckles – all are welcome at the new club.
A couple of really cool features inside Stoney’s are the
dance floor and the mechanical bull. The dance floor is sunken, which makes it
possible – if you’re in the crowd and not on the dance floor, to see over
everyone’s heads to get a good view of the band. The bull is there for people
to ride, and if you’ve never been on one and think it’s easy, go check it out
and see if you still think that way once you’ve been flung onto your butt… they
are really a lot of fun.
In total, Stoney’s will have three bars, a Mexican
restaurant, facilities for receptions and banquets, plenty of pool tables and
live entertainment from local, regional, and national acts as well.

Woody’s Grand Re-Opening
It didn’t take long for Zak
Grimes to get back in the game. Woody’s West, located at 3200 Claremont Avenue,
is up and ready to go with more live entertainment, DJs, Old School ‘80s dance
nights, laser light shows and of course, drink specials on beer, spirits and
cocktails.
You can get the lowdown on all that’s happening at the
new Woody’s by checking out page four and throughout the Nightlife guide. And
then be sure to get out there and say hey to Zak.
Underground Revival Gospel Play
The Underground is a place
where signed and unsigned artists (singers, musicians, comedians, etc.) go to
sharpen their skills and to network. You never know what will happen or who
will take the stage, but one thing you can count on is the D-List. Led by
Darius McCrary, the D-List is the house band at the Underground. They are also
the chief musicians at the church they were raised in, The First Church of God.
The group consists of seven friends (and lovers) who were not only taught to
play together, but to pray together. Over time, their musical gifts have given
them something most church folk never get the chance to experience in the real
world.
The Pastor of the First Church of God, Reverend Johnson,
is old school. He believes that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Light. No
man cometh to the Father, but by him; he believes in knockdown, drag-out, Holy
Ghost-filled church services.
The Underground is an interactive musical theatrical
event and gospel play coming to The Centre on January 21 at 7:30 p.m. Seats are
$40 and $30. All tickets are subject to Ticketmaster Fees, Handling Charges and
Facility Fees.
Tickets can be purchased at The Roberts Stadium Box
Office, The Centre Box Office, All Ticketmaster outlets including fye in
Eastland Mall and Evansville Schnuck's West. Tickets can be charged by phone by
calling 1-800-745-3000 or on the Internet at Ticketmaster.com.

“It’s like This is Spinal Tap, only it’s real.”
That’s what I heard about Anvil! The
Story of Anvil, a metal band with tremendous promise that sort of fell by
the wayside along the way. A friend and fan of the band, Sacha Gervasi, decided
to film them, and the result was a movie that has blown people away – critics
and audiences alike.
We’ll be rolling out an exclusive interview with Anvil
drummer Robb Reiner in next month’s issue. It’s fantastic and full of many of
the same kind of ups and downs that drove the film.
So stay tuned. February sees concerts coming – Willie
Nelson and Rascal Flatts among them. Look for Valentine’s Day weirdness, ala
gift ideas and things you can do to salvage your relationship with your
significant other. Mardi Gras time approaches, so we’ll be sure to give you the
heads-up on where to debauch yourself on Fat Tuesday. And it will still be
cold, so there will be a shivering wild card in there somewhere…
Keep an eye out for some other interview surprises, too.
We’re working on some cool people to talk to…
