D.H.P. Concert Series: Set it to Blend

In the midst of an extensive lineup of musicians scheduled for the Downtown Henderson Project’s Concert Series Blend will awe with their vocals and kick it old school with their style of tunes. Blend is a young and very talented a cappella group from southern Illinois who specializes in classic tracks from the 50s and 60s. They make very clear in their frivolous act that they love what they do. The band consists of John Estes, Evan Boswell, Andrew Smith, and Eric Rudd. According to Blend member John Estes the band was recently offered a full time gig in Branson, Missouri, but had to refuse because all four members were in college expanding their education.

Blend has opened for other acts such as Aaron Tippin, Confederate Railroad, and the Van Dells. The latter of the three carries personal importance to the band according to Estes. All four members were exposed to the Van Dells’ music while they were growing up and it had a major influence on them. Of course these guys aren’t out of touch with newer music; they also have major influences in contemporary music as well. Blend performs at a variety of events such as fairs, festivals, meetings and private parties. Blend shows much interest in the noble and vital cause for keeping music programs in school. They perform at schools regularly to spread the joy and importance of music for youth.

The band was formed at John A. Logan College as a minor project that quickly blossomed into the makings of a successful career for its four members. “We started over four years ago for a talent show and ended up winning it. From there, we found we had a unique sound. So, we decided to pursue it as a career,” said Estes.  The real strength of the band lies in their ability to entertain crowds of all sizes and ages with their renditions of songs which most everyone has heard at one point or another. On top of their classic doo-wop routine they are also a deeply spiritual group and love to perform gospel in religious settings.

Blend is scheduled to perform on the scenic Henderson Riverfront on Friday, July 31st starting at 7 p.m. and wrapping up at 9 p.m. Blend offers an ideal style for summer fun and makes for a perfect family event.

Rounding out the DHP Summer Concert Series are Andrea Tanaro & the Optional Italian Buffet on July 10, The Vocalystics and the Haire Family the 17th, and on July 24, Adam Blythe and Andy Norvell. All shows begin at 7 p.m. along Henderson’s scenic riverfront.
