Ellis Park Opens for 2008
by: Ashley Sollars

There is no truer spirit than that of a galloping horse. Ask any born and bred Kentuckian, and he will tell you – our pride rests in the slender legs, elongated back and the desire to win a Thoroughbred embodies. Real exhibitionists, these horses are not only beautiful, but pulling ahead is the only desire a Thoroughbred has when stampeding alongside a group of contenders.

Ellis Park showcases these beauties throughout every summer, bringing the crowds live entertainment that can’t be duplicated by simply watching television. Kentucky is home to some of the most prestigious racetracks in the world including Churchill Downs and Keeneland, but you don’t have to drive to Lexington or Louisville; Ellis Park is nestled in the heart of the tri-state area, Henderson, KY.

Built in 1922, by the Green River Jockey Club, Ellis Park embraces a rich history of being host to legendary horses, jockeys and farms, has been owned and operated by some of the most influential individuals and renowned racetracks and has twice been terrorized by Mother Nature – once by a monumental flood in 1937 and then again in 2005 by an F3 tornado. Both times, Ellis Park was open for track-goers on the first day of the season.

Ellis Park has deep roots in this part of the country but the fun hasn’t dwindled through the years. In fact, Ellis Park has become a venue of family-friendly entertainment and even gives you a break on admission and concession purchases on certain days. (This is especially nice due to the rising gas, food and energy prices!)

One of this year’s most exciting entertainment opportunities is the Party at the Paddock. Every Friday, right after the races at 7:30 p.m., there will be a performance by some of the area’s leading acts, and even some national artists. Starting with Marty Pollio, on July 11th (a comedian who has performed several times on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno) the Party at the Paddock talents range from comedy to polka to rock and everything in between.

Another favorite at Ellis Park will be coming back twice this year – the Weenie Dog Races, along with Camel and Ostrich Races, will take the track in 2008. I can’t imagine which will be the funniest site, long gangly birds, squatty hot dogs or oblong, awkward camels running toward the finish line, neck in neck, beak in beak, snout in snout… The only question I pose to the void is: Is there such a thing as a professional ostrich jockey?

You’ve always loved horses… visit Ellis Park throughout the month of July and August for Party at the Paddock, giveaways, family fun and other exciting opportunities to learn about horses, the racing industry and the park itself. Admission is only $2 and free for kids under age 17. College students, police, fire and military personnel are admitted free with valid identification.

“Times and values, of course, have changed since the days of the old carousel paddock, when the starting gate was pulled by mules, horses came and went by train, fans arrived by ferryboat, the judges’ stand was adjacent to the finish line and odds were calculated by hand.”
