Fire It UP!
The 6th
Annual Grill for the Thrill Barbecue and Music Festival
It’s 4 a.m. You wake up and
groggily pull on a pair of shorts, a “Team Saucy” t-shirt and an old pair of
kicks. On your way out the door you grab your “Hot Stuff” apron, silicone elbow-length
gloves and extra long tongs because today is the day. You don’t do this for the
money, the prestige or the Jack Daniel’s Girls… You do it because you love it.
You love feeling the burn. You love traveling the country in hopes that for
only an instant, you might be the best. You are… the Grill Master.
Four in the morning isn’t an exaggeration. In years past,
Grill for the Thrill contenders descended upon the parking lot of Roberts
Stadium in the wee hours of the morning just to get a jump on the competition.
This is serious business, folks. This isn’t backyard-burning-the-hot-dogs
grilling; this gourmet grilling is cutthroat.
Though the grillers might make their
way to the parking lot at 5 a.m., you should stay in bed for a while because
the activities start at noon. The 6th Annual Grill for the Thrill Barbecue and
Music Festival will be held September 20 and is completely FREE for festival-goers.
Grillers will compete in one of five categories including ribs, chicken, pork
and the two newest categories – hot wings and baked beans! If your mouth is
watering for some sweet BBQ, for only $7 you can be a judge! Sample all the BBQ
you can stand for the Show Me’s “People’s Choice Award” and vote for your
favorite from 3- 4 p.m. An $800.00 grand prize and the coveted Jack Daniels
trophies will be awarded at 6:00 p.m. by the Jack Daniel's Girls.
If BBQ and music really isn’t your
thing (check yourself for a pulse), a car show, held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
and a silent auction will keep everyone entertained. Enter your cruiser early
because the first 100 cars receive a Grill for
the Thrill Dash Plaque, and
entry fee is only a donation to Habitat for Humanity. There will be more door
prizes including trophies for best car and truck. All cars from classic to hot
rods are welcome!
If you think you have what it takes
to be a Grill Master, hurry because the deadline for registration is September
12th. Entry fees range from $25 - $225. Visit our website at www.news4uonline.com
for more information and to download the registration forms and complete list
of rules.
The 6th Annual Grill for the Thrill Barbecue and Music Festival, benefiting Habitat for Humanity is a hot and tangy way to round out your summer and everyone is invited!

As a Grill for the Thrill rib judge this year, I
thought it only fair that I share my very favorite rib recipe with the masses.
It’s super easy and scrumptious – and YES, I cheat because I don’t make my own
BBQ sauce; Sweet Baby Ray’s is so good! I’ll have to warn you though, it takes
forever, so don’t plan on this being a quick meal. –A. Sollars
1 rack of baby back ribs
1 bottle of "Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce"
First, buy a rack of ribs, and cut it into
about 3 chunks, so that it will fit into a pot. Fill the pot with water and
bring it to a boil.
Place the ribs sections into the pot and
boil it for 45 minutes.
After the ribs boil for 45 minutes, take
them out and place them in a large rectangular casserole baking dish and
smother them with BBQ sauce (I like “Sweet Baby Ray's” brand, but you can use
whatever kind you like best).
