Kenny Chesney Poets and Pirates tour:

I definitely think his tractor’s sexy, it really turns me on
and so did Kenny Chesney during his stop at Roberts Stadium Thursday night. For
those of you living under a rock for the past ten years, Kenny Chesney is a
country music recording artist whose idea of a good time is sitting on a beach,
shirtless, sipping a corona and playing his guitar. Now that’s my kind of man.
The show was enjoyable but nothing I haven’t seen before. Chesney is a great
performer but at times forgot the lyrics to his own songs. I guess at least we
know he wasn’t lip syncing. Maybe he was just out of breath from running around
the stage so much. I was kind of expecting a huge spectacle because the media
kept reporting on the 15 semi-trucks at Roberts Stadium that were filled with
stage equipment and show props. Instead there was a huge banner that had a
“Pirates of the Caribbean” theme and no
pyrotechnics. I at least wanted to see one flame or ring of smoke. Chesney did
do a great job of keeping the crowd on their feet and the stadium rocking. He
sang many of his classics like No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem, Shift Work, I Go
Back and Keg in the Closet. He closed the show by signing one of his guitars
and giving it to a kid in the front row who had braces on his legs. He also
hung around on stage to sign t-shirt, programs and basically whatever else
people brought. All in all I enjoyed myself screaming the lyrics to every song
and trying my hardest to touch his tight little country butt. Oh yes, I am that person!

4th Friday Film Series at the Alhambra Theatre

    The Alhambra
Theatre was originally a 350 seat community theatre built in 1913. At a cost of
$18,000 (about $400,000 in today’s dollars), it was designed by architect Frank
J. Schlotter to reflect the Moorish style of La Alhambra, a Muslim mosque in
Granada, Spain. The Moorish and Middle Eastern theme became popular in theatre
architecture across the U.S.
around the latter part of the 19th and early part of the 20th
century, and Evansville’s Alhambra is one of the lucky examples that
has dodged the wrecking ball.

The
building’s designer was a prominent local architect who designed many of the
larger Victorian houses in the area of Washington Avenue, now known as the arts
district, then a major thoroughfare linking the eastside of Evansville to
downtown. In addition to the Alhambra, he also designed the landmark Germania
Männerchor building on North Fulton Ave, and the building at 223 Main St.,
which is on the National Register of Historical Places.

At
the time of the theatre’s construction, the area around <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Washington Avenue</st1:address></st1:street> was drawing people from
across the economic spectrum. While most of the wealthier families made their homes
in the adjacent Riverside district, the <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Washington Avenue</st1:address></st1:street> area afforded blue
collar working families and store owners a place to settle down in comparable
comfort, and it was the business of this burgeoning middle class population
that the Alhambra
was built to attract.

When
the theatre first opened in September, 1913, patrons could buy confectionary
and cigars from the shop situated inside in the lower level. A soprano or other
entertainment act would entertain them between movies, and the price of admission
to see films all day long was 5 cents, or 12 Spur soda bottle caps. That’s only
about $1.06 in today’s money! When’s the last time you got an all day pass to
do anything for $1.06?

In
its heyday, the theatre was a center of neighborhood activity and a
technologically cutting edge facility. It is reputed as being the first theatre
in the area with the equipment to show the new talking films, or “talkies,” of
the 1920s and 1930s. Today, it is the hope of Alhambra Theatre Inc., a
non-profit local organization charged with the task of restoring the facility,
that the sounds of “talkies,” and other community activities can again reverberate
inside the historic structure, and it can reclaim its status as a center of
activity in the new Haynie’s Corner Arts District.

Before
that can happen, much work needs to be done on the interior of the structure. A
casual drive by the building reveals nothing out of place. The exterior
restoration of the past couple decades has helped keep the rain out and restore,
roughly, the original appearance of the building’s facade, but the interior of
the theatre is gutted. The floors are bare concrete, the walls are bare brick,
and the ceiling, besides the structural rafters, is non-existent. Only the
skeleton of a new stage and the stacks of building materials give a sense of
things to come. While the Alhambra
organization accepts any and all donations from individuals interested in
seeing the theatre returned to its former glory, major renovations will
probably have to wait until a $200,000 federal grant comes in. Even with the
money in hand, the work will take a while to complete, but in the meantime, the
public is invited every 4th Friday of the month to see movies
projected onto the west side of the building.

Called
the “4th Friday Film Series,” upcoming films include a July 25th
screening of The Philadelphia Story, starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn
and Jimmy Stewart, and August 22nd screening of Mildred Pierce starring
Joan Crawford. September’s film will be Alfred
Hitchcock's Vertigo, starring
Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak, and October’s Fourth Friday Film will be Abbott
and Costello Meet Frankenstein. The best part about all of this…the
films won’t cost you a nickel…not even 12 bottle caps of Spur Soda…they’re
FREE.

They’re baaack! Move over Miss Cleo, Swami B2 answers all
your questions on love, life and the pursuit of happiness.

Aries

March 8-April 2

Your work week will be drawn out and "totally
amazing" like the season finale of The Rock of Love 2. In other
words, it will suck and leave you miserably unfulfilled. Tasks mount as you
drone your way past vapid days. Hedge weekly spending for a weekend bender, and
possibly bail.

This week: Fast food yields a touch of the pukes.

Sagittarius

November 31-December 8

Your cats cooperate and figure out how to breach the
refrigerator door. While they munch on your leftovers, the dog ravages your
beer stash and yaks all over the kitchen floor. Don't let this rattle your
cage. Tonight, relaxation is replaced with pine-sol.

This week: Your iPod is stolen and maliciously replaced with
an awful Jon Secada mix tape.

Leo

January 16-February 11

Congratulations, You'll be
receiving a hefty check in the mail! Or... not. Actually, you'll just get
bills, and a summons for jury duty. Bummer.

THIS WEEK: PAY BRANDON.

Capricorn

June 4-June 29

The Yankees suck this season,
loyal baseball fan. An obnoxious Red Sox faithful insults Derek Jeter to your
face, forcing an immediate and electrifying scuffle. His stupid
Kevin Youkilis replica jersey is ripped off his back, the cops
are involved, charges are filed....ehhh, but at least you eradicated that
muttonhead smirk from his face. Further indicating the apocalypse is among us,
the Cubs have a WINNING SEASON. Disgusting.

THIS WEEK: DON'T FORGET TO WATCH
MONDAY NIGHT BASEBALL.

  Virgo

August 6-September 16

A Trading Spouses
marathon lets you catch a break from your crap life and sneak a peek into
someone else's. Revel the insanity and awkward tension as two contrasting
families invert for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy the ridiculous humanity
with some popcorn, although you'll probably burn it.

THIS WEEK: TELL AN OFFENSIVE JOKE
AT WORK.

Cancer

February 29-March 6

A clumsy tumble down the steps
starts your day off on a sour note. Coworkers jeer and rudely
point at your battered face and busted lips. Just because
someone circulates a company-wide e-mail calling attention
to the gaping rip in your pleated work khakis (with attached
picture) doesn't mean you can't handle the heat. You shine through
because you are a professional, and dammit, you have a job to do. No task is
too mundane for you, worker bee.

THIS WEEK: INVEST IN NEW PANTS.

Aquarius

December 1-December 25

The day erupts with a bang
(literally) as you discover your porcelain throne has exploded. Rank
toilet juice smatters every inch of your previously sanitized bathroom. Curious
cats creep into the swampy fray and scatter mucky slime throughout your
dwelling as you frantically shoo them away. An excruciating migraine adds to
the fun.

THIS WEEK: GIVE UP.

Scorpio

April 3-May 17

Escalating temperatures mean
hairball season is in full swing. Prepare for battle with your shedding
critters. Locate your grooming brush and perfect your stroke or else they'll
be firing off hairballs left and right, leaving putrid surprises in
your favorite sneakers. Ghastly hacking and revolting upchucking can be
avoided with daily diligence.

THIS WEEK: WEAR FLIP FLOPS.

Taurus

July 4-August 1

Your conservative girlfriend quits
her job to pursue exotic dancing. Slathering on fruity lotion and gyrating
for a filthy creep sporting an eye patch and Wild
Turkey breath turns her crank more than crunching numbers and balancing
budgets. It will be wise to concede your relationship, or her new found
"passion" could leave you with more than you bargained for, like
a nasty rash that requires medical attention.

THIS WEEK: YOUR eHARMONY PROFILE
IS REJECTED.

Rumble in the Jungle

Over the past year and a half in
the columns of this magazine, I have been repeating the phrase: "there is
a movement happening," and there was no better indication of that then the
contest that was sponsored by News4U,
Gator9 Entertainment, and www.midwestsyndicate.com. The Rumble In The Jungle
was a four week contest developed to introduce area independent hip hop talent
to a larger audience, and over 500 people were introduced to several emcees and
rappers ranging in styles from radio to gangsta and from lyrical to gutta. The
talent ranged from people making their first appearance on stage to rappers who
have been in the game for years. Local rap scene legends – E’ville – hosted the
event and fronted the $100 weekly prize for winners. The grand prize winner
received a music video produced by gator9 Entertainment, national music
distribution from www.midwestsyndicate.com, and News4U donated space for this article.

BigS, Bogard, BradleyT, BoopD,
CasOne, C-Good, Crispy, D-Trick, Inspector Clusoe, J-Mon (Tha Dirty Mon),
Kentucky Prophet, King Kold, Laudi, Lil Bling, Loc The Great, Mic Nuke’em,
Tee-C, Unkle Samm, and Whydhe Write were the names on the bill when the contest
started; coming from Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois in this tri-state contest.
The event was big enough to garner interest from other local names as well:
Kasper, Liv Long, MaxB, DJ Figure, Dew Dirt, Raaqim, Lil Ace, and Shabrae among
others all came out to show support, but in the end when the last metaphor was
spit and the last bass boom hit, there was one man standing… The champion of
the first annual Rumble In The Jungle is a man who proudly represents Jimtown, Evansville, and The
Wreckin Ball Crew. He is a man who congratulated each contestant in the finals
by inviting them onstage, and thanked each of them for being a part of the
process. And is a man who thanked his momma, his wife, and his kids for
motivating him. The champion of The Rumble is BradleyT.

BradT describes himself as a
country music loving, red headed, Busch Light drinking, truck driver, but don’t
let the description fool you. BradT delivered machine gun rhymes, thoughtful
family insight, gutta street action, hustle and skill each time he touched the
mic. Just listening to the fans in attendance made everyone feel like they were
witnessing something special. One fan, Jason from Henderson,
pulled me aside to tell me he never thought he would hear anything like this
guy from Evansville.
I believe the exact words were, "I can’t believe how good this guy is. Why
haven’t more people heard of him?"

Brad’s range switched from fun club
bangers like “Ballin On A Budget,” to slow heartfelt family life issues in
“Generations” to “U.S.A.,”
a song devoted to the struggles regular people face in the world today. You can
hear the songs yourself online at www.myspace.com/bradtloc. Look for more
contests and events coming from local talent. The movement IS happening all
over the city in all different music genres and styles.

Unfortunately, today is not your day... As the temperature
outside plummets, so will your luck. Someone close to you will barf numerous
times on the carpet this morning, perhaps even a pet. Keep the paper towels and
Oxy Clean handy! Have patience, as your professional environment will become
complicated. Ignore overweight, poison-spewing patrons smelling of wintergreen
Kodiak who blame you, the lowly, hourly paid associate for corporate
shortcomings and inept inventory management. Present a shield, conjure up a
smile and the curse words and insults will bounce right off. Tonight: You'll

Community feedback
will aid in growth of festival

With the extraordinary 30th anniversary of Evansville’s Freedom Festival just months
away, the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville (GAGE) is partnering with the
festival committee to distribute an online community survey in order to gather
information that is vital to the growth of the signature event. The survey,
located at www.downtownevansville.org,
will collect feedback on a variety of the festival’s events, vendors and
logistics that will aid in understanding the important needs and desires of the
Tri-State community.

“We want to help
the Freedom Festival’s organizing committee make this festival better than
ever, and to do that we are going to need help from the public,” stated Mick
Conati, Vice President of the Downtown Development Division of GAGE. “Your
feedback is very important to us as it will enable the festival to offer more
activities and events that the community desires, while allowing the festival
to continue to grow in a positive direction.”

As an added incentive,

SouthPaw Isle Steelband--FREE EVENT

Southpaw Isle Steelband will be performing at a concert at the Victory Theatre on Tuesday, February 26 at 7:00pm.
    While
rooted in Caribbean pan tradition, Southpaw Isle Steelband continually
stretches the limits of the steelband sound. The group's repertoire
includes jazz, classical, samba, calypso, and original compositions. As
the only non-Caribbean ensemble to perform at the 2004 World Steelband
Festival in Trinidad, Southpaw Isle is truly dedicated to this amazing
melodic-percussion instrument. The group's newly released CD, Carol of
the Pans, is available on the Jumbie Records Label. In December 2005,
the group presented the world premiere of 'A Caribbean Christmas Mass'
for orchestra, chorus and steelband by Glenn McClure. The Warren
Symphony commissioned this genre-bending work after Southpaw Isle wowed
audiences in the previous season with their performance of Deborah
Teason's 'Trinity, Concerto for Steelband and Orchestra.' The group has
presented workshops, assemblies, and educational concerts for students
of all ages including two sold-out performances as part of the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra's Tiny Tots Concert Series at the Max M. Fisher
Music Center.
    The
Southpaw Isle Steelband concert is part of the Patricia H. Snyder
Series. The 2007-2008 Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series is
made possible through an endowment from the late Patricia H. Snyder,
trustee and longtime friend of the University or Evansville. We are
deeply grateful for her foresight and to her family for the opportunity
to present these events to our community. Admission is Free and this event is open to the public!

The Lampion Center's A Chocolate Affair

So, Valentine's Day began as a Catholic holiday that
celebrated martyred saint, Valentinus. Now, how we came to spend this day
wooing our beloved with chocolates, flowers and promises we don't intend to
keep, when it originally was to celebrate a man's death, I don't know and I
really don't have the time to research it right now. Valentine's Day reminds me
of a decorated box and Snoopy saying "Be Mine, Valentine" on a
miniature card with a name scribbled on the envelope in red crayon.
In any event, if you have a Valentine and want to treat him or her to more than
a small card and a handful of promises, join the Lampion Center for their
annual Chocolate Affair on February 2nd. The Lampion Center is a non-profit
organization that provides counseling for children and families and adoption
services.
With 10 local restaurants and caterers donating oodles of chocolate goodies and
champagne to wash the sweetness down, you and your honey, or co-worker, or best
friend will be sure to have a splendid evening. Entertainment is provided by Monty Skelton on saxophone, Pat McCormick on piano, and the
vocal stylings of Karen Ellerbrook and Gina Moore, and a plethora of silent
auction items (listed below) will be available for bidding.
A Chocolate Affair is being held on February 2nd from 7:00
until 10:00 p.m. at the Old National Bank Wayne Henning Atrium. The cost of the
evening is $50 per person.
